Jeffry; In exploration drilling for copper to some depth, 1000 feet or so, you would not use 1" core. You would use a minimum of 1 7/8" to 2.5". Normally 1" is used for short holes for grade control and in mine drilling to extend your zones. This would be any mine, copper, gold, silver, nickel etc, as you are just extending and not exploring and the speed and ease of 1" make it quite good for that. Dome in Timmins uses an even smaller drill size, 3/4 and the core looks like a thick pencil, but the way they use it is fine for that. It would never be used for diamonds for example as you need a big sample for the extreme low grade that diamonds have. You would not normally use 1" as Freeport did for low grade gold deposits.
