Chipmaking Equipment Sales Jump 32% In Oct

Tuesday, December 14, 1999

TOKYO (Nikkei)--October sales of semiconductor-manufacturing equipment in Japan, including imports, grew 32.1% from a year earlier to 40.76 billion yen, according to figures released Tuesday by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan. This is the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year gain.

Growth was down from September, which showed a surge of 74.1% due mainly to increased deliveries of equipment to domestic chipmakers before the end of the fiscal half.

Sales of semiconductor testing devices soared 105.5% to 6.57 billion yen. Sales of equipment made in Japan, including exports, jumped 53.2% to 67.22 billion yen.

The value of total orders, including imports, stood at 52.45 billion yen, up 67.1%.

Domestic chipmakers tend to pay for equipment at the end of the first half, which usually makes October a slow month for sales.
