Metrowerks to Provide Software Tools for Motorola's New PowerPC Embedded Microprocessors; Metrowerks To Support Embedded Development For Emerging Consumer Electronics Market

AUSTIN, TEXAS--Metrowerks, Inc., today announced it has signed an agreement with Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) High Performance Embedded Systems Division to extend its popular CodeWarrior development environment to include support for Motorola's MPC8XX Power PC family of embedded processors.

The first of these new microprocessors, the MPC821, was announced in August, 1995 and is intended for use in portable electronic devices. It features high-level communications support and minimal power consumption as required by the newest portable electronic devices.

Metrowerks' CodeWarrior is the best-selling software development product for Power PC-based Macintosh applications developed using C/C++, Object Pascal or Java programming languages. Metrowerks will include support for the new MPC821 in an upcoming release of a new CodeWarrior product, "CodeWarrior for Embedded Systems."

"Motorola is the largest vendor of microprocessors for embedded systems worldwide. We are proud to be working with Motorola to extend our PowerPC tools to support the MPC821 processors," said Greg Galanos, president and CEO of Metrowerks. "CodeWarrior PowerPC compilers are used to build thousands of desktop applications by some of the largest software vendors in the industry. We are excited by the prospect of bringing our compiler technology to bear on Motorola's new Power PC embedded processors. This is a brand new market for Metrowerks and we hope to become a major player in the embedded Power PC software tools market."

"Motorola's embedded systems customers are increasingly looking for low-cost, high-performance tools to accelerate their software development programs," said Fred Shlapak, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Communications and Advanced Consumer Technologies Group. "More than ever, the embedded systems market is becoming software driven, and as a result, it is beginning to adopt many of the software development strategies of the desktop computer industry. These strategies include rapid development cycles and programmable architectures which can be enhanced by the efforts of the ISV community. Motorola intends to stay in the forefront of these developments. This new relationship with Metrowerks is evidence of this commitment."

CodeWarrior for Embedded Systems will support the MPC821 and will be hosted on both the Macintosh and Windows 95/Windows NT-based systems. It is expected to be available in the second half of this year, and is expected to have a retail price of US $499.
