Anyone have a read on this announcement from Nortel...

TORONTO, Dec 13, 1999 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) -- Nortel
Networks Corp. jumped into one of the hottest segments in electronic
commerce Monday, striking an alliance with four companies that rent
software over the Internet.

The move to join with Hewlett-Packard Co. and three startup firms marks
Nortel's entry into online software rental, a sector that is forecast
to grow next year to $200 million in Canada, according to International
Data Corp (Canada) Ltd.

Nortel, based in Brampton, Ont., said it will bundle its network
equipment with hardware from Hewlett-Packard Co. and software from HP
and three startups.

Starting in the first quarter of 2000, the five firms will then sell
the packages to Internet service providers and other carriers looking
to rent software online.

The values of the agreements were not disclosed.

Called application service providers (ASP), software rental firms
relieve customers of the task of managing and upgrading computer
programs by instead keeping them at a central site and renting or
distributing them through private lines or the Internet. (Globe and
Mail)
