EMC VS NTAP

On a flight today I began to wonder if NTAP does not truly offer a discontinuous innovation relative to EMC and SANS. Most of us recognize that each is a King in its market but is it possible that NAS offers a better storage solution. We are eagerly anticipating the collision of these two companies but if NAS is an innovation and if EMC will have to protect its backside against Sun, HP, IBM, and others they will surely be at a disadvantage.

If NAS is cheaper, easier, dumb, etc and if more and more companies move toward distributed computing we will see fewer and fewer mainframes and more and more servers even among the Fortune 500 type customers.

I own a larger position in EMC but will be watching the next earnings report very carefully. If they stumble even a little I am going to make a quick switch to NTAP. I guess I am wondering if it is time to consolidate the basket into one leader.

I would be interested in thoughts from anyone.

Regards.
