Dan,
Telling kids to just practice abstinence, is akin to putting your head in the sand. It won't happen. It isn't a symptom of U.S. culture, Euro culture, Christian culture, or any other culture. A certain percentage of kids are going to be sexually active, regardless of what race, religion, or culture they come from. It has been that way from the get go, and it will remain that way. Why deny that education will HELP, not HINDER, those kids in making decisions that will effect the rest of their lives. Information is better than ignorance in EVERY situation, not just teen age sexuality.
How many teenagers react better to a proverbial slap in the head and a forceful admonition, than by patiently telling them the facts?
Why have children living in ignorance and trying to make a difference while being buffeted by the twin forces of natural hormones and massive guilt, when they can make informed decisions and deal with their questions in a rational and direct manner?
Why do you think occurences of teenage preganancy and disease are lower in Europe? Do you think French kids are subjected to less sexual culttural influences? Do youthink Swedish kids are? Have you seen TV over there? They are much more open about sex and sex is not nearly considered as immoral.
You can't keep people from reacting to natural biological occurences. YOu can educate them, so that they understand the consequences and cn make informed decisions.
