I had a similar experience with my son, except I has never able to spend the time with him (for which I envy you). The school psychologist recommended separate tracked special ed, but he was unwilling to leave his friends in the mainstream and struggled on. He had and has a genius for friendship. He ultimately became a brilliant drummer, and an all A student -- in psychology. He pretty much fixed himself through natural talents and determination. He didn't want or accept much special help from us.
