Zicam in the "Pharmacist's Letter"

As posted from Yahoo GUMM board.

Ok, here's some real information. I received a fax of a newsletter named
"Pharmacist's Letter". The cover says "A digest and advisory service on
developments of interest to the Pharmacist".

Vol. 15, No. 12
December 1999

Dear Pharmacist:

Nerology/Psychiatry

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Cold and Flu Supplements

Manufacturers are gearing up to promote their natural products for the cold and flu
season.

Zicam is this year's hot seller for colds. Pharmacies can't keep it on the shelves.

It's a new zinc nasal spray...promoted to shorten the duration of colds. Zinc is thought
to block the rhinovirus from infecting the nasal mucosa.

Zicam is labeled as homeopathic, but it's not as dilute as most homeopathics. It
contains about 1% zinc.

Tell patients that zinc might help...but there's no evidence that Zicam is any better than
zinc lozenges.

Cold-Eeze Bubble Gum is a new alternative to zinc lozenges.

___ end of article.

As soon as the second clinical studies are released, articles such as this will say that
Zicam has been clinically proven to reduce the duration and severity of the common
cold by X%. Assuming that X% beats zinc lozenges, then they will say that Zicam is
better than zinc lozenges.

Does anybody know how many Pharmacists and Doctors read this particular
newsletter? How much clout do they have among medical professionals? I especially
like the part about pharmacies not being able to keep Zicam on the shelves. This
seems to contradict reports from short sellers that Zicam isn't selling.
