Not having a formal education, I will defer to you on these points. My main knowledge of the period comes from reading stuff like Kenelm Digby's The Broad Stone of Honour, Leon Gautier's Chivalry, stuff by Richard Barber, and other romanticists. Belloc wrote much of the period, but he tended to romanticize as well.

I have eschewed "official histories" like Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror in favor of books by Catholic historians. My favorite was The Thirteenth: Greatest of Centuries by James J. Walsh. I perceive a slight bias here.

I will admit my view on the period is idealized and romanticized, but it would be nice to see a little honesty on the part of academics. Like Crichton points out, the period was not benighted and brutal, and there was a great flowering in the arts and sciences. Why is it they cannot accept this simple truth?
