a substantial minority of those who go into law enforcement do so for less than honorable desires,
Yogi,
Isn't that somewhat of an oxymoron?
Kinda like saying that a substantial minority of those who go into teaching do so because they are sexually attracted to children.
We all know that there are very disturbed or evil people working in many positions of responsibility. The fact that the system has broken down to the extent that these people aren't intercepted before they cause harm can be attributed to the fact that lethargy has set in amongst the politicians AND THE PEOPLE, as well as the fact that at current pay structures, it can be difficult to attract quality people to law enforcement careers.
And actually, one more cause can be identified. When the local people have little regard for assisting in the enforcement of laws, why should expect their police depts to be any different?
No one has made any response to my comments on the indifference of the 30,000 demonstrators, many of them blue collar union workers, to the destruction and violence they witnessed from these thugs who rioted in Seattle.
30,000 people in the general area, and not one of them was apparently willing to make a citizen's arrest and notify the police.
Nope... not my job, they say... That what I pay the police for, right?? Hmm... but when the police need a witness or statement from most people in order to actually convict a perpetrator, most folks simply say... "I don't want to get involved".
Btw, I was having this conversation last night with a guy I met here in DC. It turned out he had been at Kent State when the shootings occurred. He recalled hearing the shots and going to investigate and he saw all of the National Guard troops milling about in the aftermath.
He told me the thing that struck him most about this scene was the incredible look of fright, if not terror, on the faces of the National Guard troops. Troops who had been thrust into a situation they were not adequately prepared or trained for. Many of whom were also college students (that's how they avoided the draft in the first place).
I suspect that much the same was occurring in Seattle. You had some cops were VERY frightened by the prospect of 30,000 people going nuts and rioting. They reaction was brute force and intimidation because it way the only way to keep the situation contained...
.....instilling more fear into the other guys than you are feeling yourself.
