irt STRATFOR statement

I read STRATFOR's email every morning, and think well of them generally, but in this case I believe they've fallen into the trap of seeing the OPEC member countries as greedy half-wits. This view, which we see expressed over and over in the media (until it seems to many that it almost must be true because it's so commonplace) holds that higher oil prices are irresistible to those poor dim oil producers. They will doubtless abandon their agreements and open the taps to get a few extra dollars in the short term. Like small children who cannot see past what they want Right Now.

This interpretation of the producers is comically overly simplistic and inaccurate. imho. They have, as individual nations, ALWAYS acted in what they perceived to be their own best interests. (Not unusual, that. <G>)
---Often, in past years, it has been in individual countries' best interests to say one thing and do another irt quotas, etc. But they are not necessarily going to act the same under different circumstances.
---Circumstances Now are quite different.
At this point in time, it is clear to anyone paying attention that it is in the producers' individual and collective best interest to maintain unity; The producers acting together and maintaining cohesion is the reasonable assumption now and for some time to come.
---Thinking that they can't act in their own best interest, but will break down in their resolve because of the lure of a few quick bucks is not reasonable. imho.

diana
