Sorry about looking up the botched link from Eric's followup, the real link came up with an equally entertaining result:

There was nothing interesting in the first 10, so I let it pass.
So, within a year, Bill will "embrace and extend" Linux. Or perhaps "embrace and demolish", in the more direct Ballmerese. It could happen. Do you think they'll be able to launch on Dec. 7, 2000, the fifth anniversary of that other "day that will live in infamy"? Subtle symbolism is always fashionable at One Microsoft Way.
Semi-seriously, I'm sure Microsoft could do a nice Linux distribution. They've ported IE to Solaris and other Unix variants. If they wanted to, I'm sure they could extend that work a little and come up with a Linux runtime package that would do a pretty good job of Windows emulation. Somehow, I don't think that quite fits in with the business plan. The time scale seems a little off, anyway. I think you said that Microsoft would have a world class lobbying team in place six months after their antitrust troubles started. Maybe that effort got hung up in the NT2K death march or something, an amusing snapshot of the excellent results obtained by the current dream team so far can be read at upside.com . Maybe they just didn't want to embarrass the legal dream team, or let the lawyers get off easy. |
