12/15 8:27A (BW) Analysts Report That Lucent Technologies Made dramatic Third-Quarter Market Share Surge in DSL Equipment Market Story 0648 (LU, LUTI-D, I/SOF, I/TEL, I/CPR, I/CMT, N/BW, N/PREL, N/NET...) MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1999--Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) outgrew its competition during the third quarter in the hot market for digital subscriber line (DSL) equipment, according to the latest reports from two market analyst firms. Service providers are increasingly deploying DSL technology to deliver high-speed voice, data and Internet services over existing copper wires, creating a rapidly growing need for reliable and scalable DSL equipment. Both the Dell'Oro Group and Synergy Research Group report that Lucent has made major gains in this exploding market over the last two quarters. Dell'Oro Group reported that Lucent moved into first place in the SDSL (symmetric digital subscriber line) market, scoring a six-fold gain in sales to reach a 38 percent share of worldwide revenues. From second quarter to third quarter the worldwide SDSL market grew 89 percent in revenues and 85 percent in ports shipped, Dell'Oro reported. Lucent was the only DSL equipment vendor to gain market share during the quarter - all others lost share, according to Dell'Oro Group. Synergy Research Group said Lucent recorded triple-digit third-quarter gains in both revenues and units shipped in the worldwide DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) market. Lucent grew its revenues by 222 percent and its units shipped by 169 percent over the second quarter a growth rate several times faster than the next competitor, and far higher than worldwide market revenue growth of 36 percent reported by Synergy. In this market too, while Lucent gained market share, all major competitors lost share, according to Synergy. Internet users increasingly want high-speed connections that enable them to communicate more effectively with corporate networks, surf the Web and transfer large data and graphics files faster. DSL technologies allow fast transmission - up to 100 times faster than a standard 56 Kbps modem - over copper wires that already connect most homes and businesses. "End users are demanding high-speed access, and Lucent's offerings are quickly becoming the first choice of service providers," said Curt Sanford, group president, Lucent InterNetworking Systems. "To gain share in these competitive markets shows vividly that Lucent is on the right track." Lucent offers integrated solutions for providing DSL services at speeds ranging from 128 Kbps to 8 Mbps. Its products include both the central office equipment and the customer premises equipment required for implementing DSL services over existing twisted pair copper wiring. This equipment enables Third-Quarter Market Share Surge in DSL Equipment Market service providers to provide advanced communications services in the multi-dwelling unit (MDU) and small office/home office markets with minimal investment.
