OT - Gould advocates macro-mutation (saltation) as part of punctuated equilbrium. Eldridge advocates "rapid gradualism". It's Gould's macro-mutation that isn't very well accepted as I understand it. Maybe things have changed. While it's interesting to apply terms like this to cultural circumstances - like technology. Strictly speaking, it's an error. But I know what you're trying to say. Rich
