Unless the FDA has changed its mind, Celebrex can only be prescribed for arthritis associated problems. And no more than a couple of weeks ago, there was a large advertising supplement in New YTimes Sunday magazine, and it advertised Celebrex for arthritis or arthritis related problems.

On the other hand, VIOXX can be prescribed for arthritis or for other pain like, menstrual cramps, for instance. I've read the literature that was published about VIOXX in the press. I've also read the literature that was in my VIOXX sample box. Merck has a dictionary on their home page that is easy for the public to read. Perhaps, they have included a description of VIOXX.

There must be some chemical difference between the two drugs.

Why doesn't VIOXX help my back pain? I don't know. I have to see another doctor who will probably MRI the area. The pain is only in one location and has been going on for years.
