Goutama,

A wonderful Forbes story. Should be an up day tomorrow.

I went into a CompUSA and a Circuit City in Las Vegas today to check out what Athlon systems they might have on display. Well, Athlon far out numbered PIII. At CompUSA, there was only one HP 733 system (that used SDRAM). THe next lowest PIII from HP was at 550 Mhz. The CompUSA house brand had a 667 Mhz PIII system. I asked the ignoramus salesperson that wanted to "help me" what he thought of the Athlon processor. He told me that it was faster than the PIII, except for the 733 that HP had on display. I informed him that the 700 Mhz Athlon that Compaq had on display would be faster due to the use of SDRAM in the HP system, and that the Compaq made to order Athlon 750 would be much faster. He decided to agree with me. Now listen to this!

When I asked the sales guy at Circuit City which was faster (the HP PIII system or the Athlon Compaq systems), he said, "oh, the Athlon is much faster." "The 200 Mhz bus on the Athlon makes it 40% faster than the PIII HP system. I swear to God, this is what he told me. Being the AMD investor that I am, I did not choose to correct him on his ignorance. The point is that the 200 Mhz bus that the Athlon has is a marketing bonanza for AMD. Sales reps are ignorant buffoons, and they are making the Athlon sound even better than it is.

I'm buying more tomorrow if this crazy price drop continues tomorrow.

Pravin.
