So now to the business point at his firm the decision was made not to use the program due to the cost of the program. From what i gather it there was a monthly retainer involved. My son is not in the financial end of the business and i am going under the assumption his statement was correct.

A very familiar story.

I have been developing software using ObjectStore for more than 5 years. It is a brilliant product beyond all doubt, and deserves much greater success that it has achieved (despite an unfortunate quality lapse in release 6.0, which is currently being fixed).

However the product is way overpriced, especially to software developers. And guess what? If developers don't build applications using the software, the company doesn't get to sell any runtime licenses.

Microsoft essentially gives away SQL Server development tools so that they can make money on runtime licenses. I paid $15,000 for two (no, that is not a typo) ObjectStore development licenses. My biggest obstacle in selling applications that use ObjectStore is that the company prices its product "about 10 times higher than Microsoft" to quote one of my prospecttive customers.

In my neck of the woods, Object Design is notorious for having a great product but not selling it because of ridiculous pricing. Your son's experience is the rule, not the exception.

I bought shares in ODIS because of its superb technology. I sold them again because of its horrible marketing.
