swisstrader madam/sir: as far as the U.S. or elsewhere is concerned, I don't know. I am in Japan and thus bought Trans Cosmos (9715) through my Japanese broker. In Japan, stocks are only traded in fixed-size lots. Most shares are sold in 1000s, some in 100s, a few as single shares (NTT for example). Trans Cosmos is traded in units of 100s. At today's price (though still bid-only) of 39,800 yen per share, you need 3,800,000 yen (about $40,000) or any whole-number multiple of that.
Outside of Japan, though, your broker might be able to get you odd-sized lots, like Merrill does for Softbank buyers. Anybody in the know out there?
