re: VoIP, beyond the toy stage?
Hello Stephen, in reply to your question:
"VOIP: Is it more than a toy yet?"
In a word, Yes, the technology is well beyond the toy stage. Which is not to say that toy-like offerings in this emerging space still don't abound.
To begin a discussion on this topic requires agreement on the parts of those who would enter such a discussion that this isn't a single discussion, rather, it's a lot of discussions.
The first time that I can recall getting into a discussion on this analogy of toy vs technology was in 1995 in a thread titled: I-Phones. I am still discussing that one with some of the original participants.
A serious review of this topic would require that we spend several days just cataloging the variations which exist now, such as the differences between IP Telephony, VoIP, and other packetized forms of telephony.
I think that studying the offerings, and the independent reviews along with revenue projections of such companies' offerings as ITXC, LVLT (who announced their von inauguration the other day), and NTOP, among others, should begin to tell us how well this technology is along the way to being fully commercialized beyond the chasm stage, and how it is being accepted by the user community.

ps - You are probably already aware of the VoIP thread which has been in existence for the past three years here in SI. Subject 17774
If you go back about a year or so, you will find many posts there which address some issues which are just now coming to the fore in the real world. |
