If raw performance were the key to that market, than Intel Xeon 8-way machines would also be a big threat - they currently provide performance about equal to the S80 at less than half the price.

IBM knows that the real key is overall wrapping of the offer, and making the architecture work - that's what WebSphere is all about. Until IBM comes out with a big partionable machine, they will not be able to target the starfire. SP doesn't get it, since it is a specialized MP architecture much like Tandem Himalaya and does not support a generalized SMP programming model.

IBM certainly has the technical capability to go after that space but they would at the same time target their own S390 offerings, so they are between a rock and a hard place.
