Yes, I've had to file that form myself. You will almost always get a much smaller penalty that way instead of letting the IRS compute the penalty for you. It's a big pain, but well worth it.

For the rest of you who haven't done it, this form (I don't remember the number) allows you to figure your under-withholding penalty by quarter instead of averaged over the whole year. Even if your gains are spread evenly over the year, you can benefit by subtracting any loss carry-forward from the first quarters.

Never. Never, never, never trust the IRS to figure your taxes or penalties. They don't even understand their own forms. In fact, if you fill out the forms according to the IRS advice you can still be penalized if their advice is wrong.

Oh, don't get me started....
