Tim, that is one of the most incredibly-illuminating articles I have read in some time. Some quotes from it:

"The all-optical network will triumph for the same reason that the integrated circuit triumphed: It is incomparably cheaper than the competition."

"The law of the telecosm ordains that the total bandwidth of communications systems will triple every year for the next 25 years. "

And a key one:
"fiber-optic systems therefore could pass bits no faster than the switching speed of transistors" (They mean SILICON, not GaAs. Combined with the above statement, we can see that GaAs becomes more and more of a *requirement* in order to support the 'law of telecosm'. In short, it's Vitesse's GaAs circuits which *allow* gigabit, multi-gigabit, and of course terabit bandwidths...as is the case with WDM).
