I agree that it is not in the best interests of the OPEC + co-operating producers to try to maintain a high price. My point was that it is in their best interest to continue to work together. What their collective strategies and goals should be is another question, but clearly they gain an advantage as individuals by being part of a group whose members deal honestly with each other, and act together to pursue common goals. At some future point in time it may be that their interests will diverge. That is the nature of the world. Allies become adversaries. Partners become competitors. And visa-versa.

The points you make about inherent cyclicality are good ones.

jackie's points about depletion also must be taken very seriously.
