Thu 16 Dec 99 News Release
Mr. Roderick Bryden reports
World Heart today released the following statement respecting the
resignation of Dr. Wilbert Keon from his position as director general of
the University of Ottawa heart institute.
Roderick M. Bryden, chairman and chief executive officer of WorldHeart,
said: "Dr. Keon is one of the leading heart surgeons in the world. His
skill and knowledge are unaffected by the unfortunate incident which led
Dr. Keon to resign from his position at the University of Ottawa heart
institute. It was the vision of Dr. Keon that led to the Canadian
artificial heart program, through which HeartSaverVAD was created by the
team led by Dr. Tofy Mussivand. We are looking forward to Dr. Keon
implanting the first HeartSaverVAD next summer.
Dr. Keon has no ownership interest in WorldHeart and he occupies no
position in the corporation. Our volunteer clinical advisory board, which
includes eight of the world's leading doctors in this field, is chaired by
Dr. Keon. This incident will have no effect on his role with this board.
The Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation holds just under 10 per
cent of the common shares of WorldHeart. This ownership will be unaffected
by Dr. Keon's resignation from his position in the OHI.
We at WorldHeart, are saddened by this incident and its effect on a
wonderful man. There is no impact on our corporation and we are confident
that the people of Ottawa will continue to see Dr. Keon as the outstanding
citizen and leader in our community that his life of service has made him."

statements.
