Ptask, these are not really wafers, these are ceramic pellets on which the catalyst is deposited, the Japanese have dual capabilities in that as far as I was led to believe (not direct knowledge). Pd is less refractory, the converters based on Pd have shorter life and are supposed to be "poisened" more easily by sulphur and even some oxides of nitrogen. They use more of it than Pt, but when the price is half that of Pt it balances out. I believe that US producers use Pt (or at least a majority of Pt) exclusively mostly because the EPA requirements here are stricter.
