Attention Business/Technology Editors:

Kasten Chase's VersaPath(TM) selected by USDA

TORONTO, Dec. 16 /CNW/ - Kasten Chase (TSE-KCA) today announced an
agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural
Research Service (ARS) to implement the VersaPath(TM) e-business solution. The
system, which has currently completed initial deployment, provides secure
connectivity via USDA's intranet to eight USDA ARS offices throughout the
United States. The department has initially purchased 256 end user licenses.
"The full scale rollout of VersaPath within the ARS is a strong
endorsement of VersaPath's highly secure, robust and functional capabilities,"
said Jerry Mendoza, senior account executive for VersaPath. "The large number
of existing ARS host-computer software applications that will now have the
ability to be accessed via the Internet due to the implementation of VersaPath
is a strong testimonial to the effectiveness and value of the VersaPath
e-business solution. Further expansion of the ARS network is planned for the
new year."
VersaPath will allow ARS employees secure Internet desktop and/or browser
access to existing mainframe-based software applications. ARS will realize
considerable cost savings resulting directly from the implementation of
VersaPath. These include the elimination of traditional high cost non-Internet
based communications links. Additionally, ARS will not have to make the costly
and time consuming investment associated with rewriting existing software
applications in order to make them Internet accessible.

About VersaPath(TM)
VersaPath software enables businesses to utilize their existing host-
centric software applications to securely conduct business over the Internet.
Host-centric software applications are applications that reside in mainframes,
mid-range computers, servers and other centralized computing environments. A
significant portion of corporate applications and data reside in mainframe
environments. In fact, according to Meta Group, an independent research
organization, more than 70% of corporate data still resides in the mainframe
environment. Because these applications were not designed for use over the
Internet, businesses that wish to use them online require solutions such as
VersaPath to enable them to do so.
VersaPath e-business solutions serve as a highly secure, cost effective
and comprehensive bridge between host-centric software applications and the
Internet They do this by using sophisticated algorithms to interpret and
convert existing data streams into popular browser formats for use over the
Internet. Customers apply these solutions to facilitate Internet access to
their existing software applications. Once accessed, these software
applications can be utilized to the same extent as available by direct
connection with the host computer.
VersaPath includes the necessary data security solutions required to do
business on the Internet. End-to-end data encryption and strong authentication
ensure the protection and integrity of competitive, mission critical and
business sensitive data in an e-business environment. VersaPath is a highly
scalable solution, appealing to organizations with between 500 and 40,000
employees.

About e-Business
Conducting business online and providing employees, customers, suppliers
and other third parties with online access to business applications is
commonly referred to as e-business. E-Business initiatives can include such
activities as companies purchasing and selling goods and services, extending
central applications to branch offices, vendors sharing inventory and sales
information with distribution partners to enhance their sales process, and
companies utilizing applications of other companies. The strategic importance
of e-business is driving the demand for solutions that enable existing
software applications to be accessible from and operate over the Internet.
