Well, I actually saw a scene in a movie once... it was that chess movie about the little kid who was a chess whiz (what was the name of that one, anybody remember?) - where the mentor told the kid that to win he had to hold his enemy in contempt (who was actually his friend).

I don't know if thats true... however, my guess is to win you need to think you are BETTER than everyone else at a minimum. And I don't really see anything wrong with one person thinking they are greater than someone else in a selected area or field. In fact, I resent it when someone that isn't as good implies that talent/skill etc. is immaterial or doesn't matter (violates a capitalism doctrine in my mind I think).

So overall, since its highly subjective as to who really is better, the entire notion of what someone thinks about themselves is too difficult to judge. Therefore - why bother?
