Today in and of itself is not that important in my mind. Sure, most early LINUX adopters are of the Mr. Softie hating variety...software jihad if you will. But should adoption of Linux for whatever reason increase in the out years, then what MSFT invests today in Linux will be of use three, five or however many years down the road. I view this as a chess match. He/she that can see the most moves ahead, weigh the various options and knows both themself and their opponents capabilities will often take the game.
By quick example: SUNW is the Java king, but who makes the best development tools for Java? MSFT

A wise man once said,
Keep your friends close and keep your enemies closer.

MSFT will keep LINUX close.
