Jack --
SDLI sells to Tyco (not mentioned by name), Alcatel, Lucent, Corning, Pirelli, Nortel, Ciena, JDSU, and literally all the DWDM vendors. They don't sell to any end users. The major contracts are noted on their web site under company news: sdli.com
Alcatel and Tyco are the leaders in undersea systems. Nortel and Lucent appear to be battling for leadership in the nascent metro market. Ciena plays in both and does well considering the size of its opponents.
Ortel missed the long-haul market and is going gang-busters to be a player in the metro space. One of its under-valued assets is its manufacturing facilities and its recent strength makes me think it won't be under-valued for long. MRVC's Optical Access unit appears to be coming out of hiding, as well. ETEK's another player, with passive components (in Uniphase's space), and for some reason I've never owned it. Just never got around to it.
The beauty of investing in components companies is not having to decide which vendor wins. Let the giants jockey for space without losing a moment's sleep.
If you don't read the JDSU thread, you may want to check out the reports for their annual meeting today. They're adding to manufacturing space at a stunning rate. A couple research report summaries were posted today, as well.
