<The basic hole in Cisco's recent approach to "buy" their way into the Carrier market like they did in the Enterprise market is that in the Carrier market, ability to IMPLEMENT, INEGRATE, and SUPPORT network infrastructure buildout is in many cases just as, of if not, more important than merely selling the newest technology-in-a-box.>
Telecomguy, you do make some interesting points here. I think Cisco is betting on people like KPMG to provide the Integration, services and support. KPMG has experience in building ennterprise networks. I do think building carrier network is a different animal.
I agree, this is where Lucent Netcare division and Nortel's support excels in securing some contracts. Look at LU's young carrier customer like Winstar, Level three, KMC telecom and so on. Same think true with Nortel. They are not only supplying the old PTTs/Big Tier1 Telcos, but also to the upstart hot new generation carriers.
It sure will be an interesting and exciting story to follow through next 5 years.
I feel Cisco will continue to dominate the enterprise networks and make their living at the edge of the network, hence they will be a force BUT with lesser market capitalization as the margins erode at the edge of the network.
