Actually, Duncan, Willie Brown is WORSE than a Clinton Democrat, although it is true that Clinton taped an endorsement message for him that was sent to telephone numbers all over San Francisco and played on the radio.
Willie Brown is an old-style Democratic machine politician, the very most corrupt kind. He is such a whore that he went to the Republican party in San Francisco (a distinct minority, but old money and power) and got an endorsement from them, because they were so afraid of Willie's opponent, Tom Ammiano. If you knew how liberal Brown has been for his entire career, you would be amazed by that. It is as essentially strange, really, as IRA commander Martin McGuinness, a high school dropout by the way, being made the new Education Minister for all of Northern Ireland. A real head scratcher, a scenario beyond your worst nightmare for most people.
There was a cartoon in our local paper today which I found very amusing--Willie Brown is asleep in bed with his obnoxious fedora hanging on the bedpost and his old ugly bald head peaking out from under the covers. There is a big Republican elephant on the other side of the bed, and he is trying to slink out of the room unnoticed while Willie sleeps. It's the old "politics makes strange bedfellows" theme. |
