'Governance Focus' on Calpers Pension fund's goof deserves a closer look - CBS MarketWatch

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Talk about your clerical errors. Calpers -- the California Public Employees Retirement System -- had a doozy this week. At least that's what it says. ... ... ...

The next edition of "The List" is supposed to go out in February. And that's where the butter-fingers come in.

The nominees for the new list somehow got into the agenda materials for this week's board meeting. And those materials were sent out to news reporters who cover Calpers, including our distinguished colleagues at Bloomberg News, who promptly published the tentative list. Several newspapers picked up the story. ... ... ...

For its part, the Calpers PR staff hid under a rock the day the list was published. After dodging phone calls from CBS.MarketWatch.com throughout the trading day, its public affairs staff finally issued a news release a few minutes before the market closed that seemed to blame Bloomberg for the mix-up. ... ... ...

For that reason, Calpers is being nominated for the first (and probably the last) Gadfly Corporate Governance Focus List in the hope the pension fund will improve its performance in potentially damaging situations affecting the investments of its members and the investing public at large.

These guys seem to be good at blaming others for their own goofs. They should learn to take responsibility of their own actions.

Can the investors of the companies on Calper's list sue them for any losses they endured yesterday because of this goof?
