Hello Christine!

A few personal observations re wine (grapes). A few years ago I was very involved with helping a fellow who had 80 acres in commercial production.

No shortage of chemical use. Effect on environment??? He used one tractor - easy to imagine some long term erosion issues.

On labor side of things, harvesting grapes is not a day at the beach. Sucks big time.

His land was very steep (El Dorado County, CA) and of no use for most other types of ag. Different story in many other locations. By the way -- you ever see the hillside vineyards along the Rhine and Moselle - if they were ski runs, some would be black diamonds!

Did you know that one of the largest wine producing regions in America is around Ft Stockton, TX. Amazing, what you sometime learn when you can't possibly drive one more mile and the next blip on the interstate's another hour down the road. I may have gotten this info from one of those
educational paper place mat thingies. FWIW, if you ever find yourself on that part of I-10 at the end of the day, the Holiday Inn has it all over the Super Eight. Plus, they take pets. If you can, though, go for the Comfort Inn in Van Horn, about an hour west -- just down the main drag is Chuy's - one of the great little Tex-Mex spots on the planet.

I think I'll go get another glass of wine.

If you're really interested, check with UC Davis. Best wine school there is - try the website?

Mike
