"I'm still surprised you poo poo'ed on CNXT right after it was spun"

This is hardly a ringing anti-endorsement.

The DSP group was lame. They must be riding the broadcom wave.

DSL is big -- in 2 yrs.

The number of hours which a PVR's can record is the most important measure of that product, in the eye of the consumer. Crappy video quality will hurt the reputation of the product. It already has in a few PVR cases.

What makes the PVR's at Echostar and soon DirecTV so impressive is that they have the world's best $100K encoder at the "head-end" working with the best possible source signal -- not a $30 chip forced to accept noisy, distorted analog cable TV signals. This is a major win for DBS, and I bet it will spur cable TV operators to switch to more digital services faster than otherwise.

No, there is no encoder chip in the Echostar/WebTV 7200/Displayer 500.

I told you slapping a hard disk in these boxes was going to be the next big thing. And now it is. DVD is nice too (but not on the PC).
