By Liza Roberts, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 6:47 AM ET Dec 15, 1999 NewsWatch MUNICH (CBS.MW) -- German electronics manufacturer Siemens AG and Japan's No. 1 watch-maker, Casio Computer Co., said Wednesday they've agreed to make a new Windows-based, palm-sized, wireless personal computer that can access the Net and make phone calls.
Siemens ranks third among Europe's makers of wireless communications devices using global standards for mobile communications (GSM) technology, while Casio (csioy) brings to the project its experience as a maker of the Cassiopeia Microsoft (msft) Windows CE-based multimedia palm-sized PC's. "The marriage of Siemens communication technology with Cassiopeia multimedia features and functions promises to create powerful new products," said Kazuo Kashio, president of Casio. The companies plan to unveil a prototype of the still-unnamed device at a European technology trade show in February next year. They say it will come with full multimedia capabilities including digital music and video, a color touch screen, wireless e-mail and Internet access, mobile phone services, and personal information management software.
The device is the first of what the companies said they anticipate will be a range of similar wireless devices that will work on GSM networks, which are prevalent in Europe, but also will have the "potential" to work on CDMA networks as well, which are common in the U.S.
"This partnership builds on our respective strengths," said Peter Zapf, president of Siemens Communications Devices. "We intend to spearhead the next revolution that will be driven by the convergence of information and communications."
Siemens shares added 0.85 euro to 116.70 in Frankfurt. In Tokyo, Casio shares fell 18 yen, or 2 percent, to 831.

Fonix has ported it's ASR onto Casio hand held devices, the first article above states that the palm sized wireless internet computer is the first in a series of hand held devices to be introduced by Casio. The current version has personal information management software, which likely includes the Fonix ASR demonstrated on the Casio PDA @ SpeechTEK '99. ...time will tell.
You can bet that there will be a Casio/Siemens palm sized computer with Fonix voice recognition, as was demonstrated @ SpeechTEK'99. >>> |
