Agreed. But this one-boat excuse is a pretty transparent veneer, as AT did not have to race YA either -- they had already secured their spot.

Despite being a YA partisan, what I wanted most was to see it come down to the last race with Le Defi. AT disrupted that by unilaterally deciding which of the two teams would advance. While Cayard is accused of dumping too, at least he made the French work for their bread.

AT simply took the first opportunity it could to kill off the more dangerous competitor; I really don't think geography/nationality had much to do with it (despite your valid point re: hosting dynamics). In this regard, it was good gamesmanship, but extremely bad PR. I think such actions hurt the sport, and potentially deter potential new fans and sponsors.

My suggestions for some rules modifications: 1) require that all teams must complete all scheduled races of a round robin if possible; 2) allow different yacht clubs within a host nation to compete for the right to host the cup (so for example, if A1 wins and brings it to SF for 2003, New York or some other US club could win it there and bring it to their own site).

Away from that, my prediction: A1 over Luna Rossa in the LV finals; A1 defeats NZ. Then again, if Dennis can get his hands on one of YA's boats..... :))
