David, I just wanted to correct your message #182 where you say "Have you tried MCXpress? You can buy the software now for $9,995 and use your own computer/disk drives."

The $9,995 price includes not only the software but also 4 PCI boards: an Atto ExpressPCI (SC) SCSI board, a Digidesign Audiomedia III audio board, an Avid video I/O and display board, and an Avid video compression/decompression board.

This boardset is identical to the boardset in (base models of) Avid Media Composers. Thus, were one to take an Avid MCX (Macintosh) with the above boardset, load the Avid Media Composer software, and connect a Media Composer dongle, the MCX will become a Media Composer.

Also, the $9,995 (base model) MCX (Mac) includes dual decoder chips (C-Cube 560's) on the compression/decompression board, so it's there if you ever upgrade to the Realtime Effects option.

By the way, all MCX (Macintosh) systems and all Media Composers include these dual decoder chips, which are required for true dual streams of 30 frame/sec. (60 field/sec.) video. This true dual stream video has been available from Avid for over 3 years. I understand that Media 100 says they will ship true dual stream video this year.
