Nortel extends its lead over Lucent in OC-192 unless Lucent's claims about optical switching are correct and result in a significant competitive advantage for Lucent. I do not believe this will happen because Nortel, in 2000, will market its Packet Core product which will extend Nortel's lead even further. "Packet Core", as I understand it, will have some integration of the optical layer and switching/routing layer via a common control system so that additional bandwidth can be delivered to points of congestion on the network. I believe Nortel is ahead in this technology and it will result in considerable benefits for the carriers. QWest and Level3 must be believers because they chose Nortel over Lucent.
