AOL Now Has More Than 20 Million Subscribers in 15 Countries

Dulles, Virginia, Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- America Online Inc., the largest Internet service, said it now has more than 20 million subscribers in 15 countries.

Dulles, Virginia-based AOL said it's added 10 million subscribers to its AOL service in the last two years. The company most recently introduced AOL Hong Kong on Sept. 28 and AOL Brasil on Nov. 16 and serves customers who speak seven languages.

AOL plans to introduce services in Mexico and Argentina next year, said AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham.

AOL said it will give $20 million through the AOL Foundation to Digital Divide programs, which help give people exposure to the Internet. The money will ''bridge the Digital Divide,'' and ''help ensure that nobody is left behind,'' in using the Internet, said America Online Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Steve Case.

America Online shares have more than tripled in the past 12 months. They rose 1/8 at 86 1/4 in late morning trading.
