Lizzie, I don't know about big vineyards, but on small sites, grapes (in my experience) are harvested by hand and it is damn hard work -- and a good way to cut your hand to ribbons.

Re. wine.com outfits - some of what you say is true but stops short of other issues. 1. There is the problem of underaged people buying wine (no problemo!). 2. The distribution and taxation issues are a bigger scandal than most realize.

BTW, did you know that in CA, bar and restaurant owners MUST buy booze from approved distributors? Get caught buying supplies from a discount retailer and there will be a few ruts in your road.
