Not much comparison between Olsen and McNealy - Ken was not much of a technologist. His expertise was power supply design and getting heat out of a box, he didn't know much about computers. You would have to look to Gordon Bell to see who really drove DEC's success. Bell left DEC in the mid-80's after a heart attack and DEC went downhill from there. Lots of reasons to think DEC would not have done so poorly if Bell had stayed and provided a counterbalance to Olsen's rather non-technical management.
