I have no preference, but I like to buy cheap.
Both have far to go, but the lights are at an earlier stage and thus less exploited, with some exceptions such as Cree. Judging by the recent action in some of the smaller stocks, investors are waking up to the opportunity. The big market for replacement of incandescent indoor lighting hasn't even started yet, but will happen as cost comes down.
Telecom is a very competitive market. The stocks have been hot for several years now, which has attracted a lot of new investment to the area, perhaps over-investment. Furthermore, most of the stocks are selling at very high multiples (some of earnings, some of sales, some of hype). Many shareholders are uninformed and complacent. Stir this all together and you've got a dangerous mix. Still, if you can identify an emerging technology ahead of the crowd, you can be sure that the crowd will find it before long. You won't get stuck with an undiscovered 'gem' that languishes.
