I see your point now about the food chain.

Go down to AXTI at the bulk substrate level and you get both. No need to choose. They can potentially have a larger and more diversified customer base. I worry a bit that GaAs substrates could become a commodity business like Si substrates, but if their VGF method is really something special, that won't be a problem anytime soon. I was very close to getting in early last week, but I got distracted by a Christmas shopping snafu and missed it. :-(

Equipment suppliers like AIX and EMKR also participate in both markets.

At the device level, companies tend to specialize where they are strongest. So, if you want a pure play in either illumination or telecom, that's where in the food chain to be.

KOPN is in-between, at the epitaxial wafer level, and they've chosen to specialize in telecom. Why not just buy CNXT if you want exposure there? They make the chips and grab the lion's share of the profits. That's another one that got away from me this year.
