I was thinking about putting Christmas lights on a tree outside. I love to look at Christmas lights, but I feel guilty about them because they are not necessary, and so endanger the environment unnecessarily. But I am tempted by the idea of wrapping the tulip tree in lights, all around the trunk, and the major branches, all the way as far as I can reach on a tall ladder.

I remember the first time I saw that done. I was driving in Manhattan, and passed a restaurant that had its outside trees, the ones on the patio wrapped, with white lights, I think it was the Quilted Giraffe, near Central Park, and it wasn't Christmas. I was astonished by the beauty.

Maybe it's not really beautiful, maybe it's just ostentatious. I'd use tiny multicolored lights. I can see it in my mind's eye. That's probably good enough.
