On a less weighty note, I received the following email at work today.

Subject: Y2K & Service Center Phones

Due to nature of voice mail not giving the year on the date stamp of voice mail messages it was decided not to upgrade the software on the telephone voicemail systems (at a cost of $2000.00+ per system). Instead the year will be changed on the system using the perpetual calendar to an earlier year that will have the same days of the month as in the year 2000. This will be done twice, once on January 3rd 2000 and again on March 1st 2000. Why two times? Because the underlying Basic Imput/Output System software does not allow using dates before 1980. Therefore I will change the date for the days of the week to match the year 2000 calendar for Jan - Feb 28th and again for March 1st throught the rest of the year.

What is the down side to handling the Y2K issue in this manner? When the date is reset, all save messages will be lost. Therefore please make note of all your important saved voice mail messages and then delete them. I will be changing the date of the telephone voice mail systems on Monday January 3, 2000.

On another less weighty note, they had a little Y2K riff on last night's "ER" episode.
