Scott: I hope you're right and do well. Me, I'm just looking to take a few points from a short trade. Unlike you, I have no notion of what "tapeless video" is. I have trouble turning on my radio. And I am firmly convinced that there are only two people in these 48-contiguous states capable of programming a VCR...and they travel incognito. (Lee)
I don't know, Lee. I think you've got more technical ability than you're letting on. Were you the one who switched from WebTV to a real PC this year? Can't quite remember.
You know, I deal with complex electronic devices and computers all the time, and I have an engineering degree, but about 1/3 of the time, I mess up what I'm trying to tape. Either I pick the wrong channel, or the wrong time, or I forget to turn off the power, or I forget to adjust the clock for daylight savings.
Each time I make one of those mistakes, I add it to my mental checklist. So now when I set up a show, I try to run through everything that has gone wrong in the past, and I seem to be doing better. (Also, my newest VCR sets its own clock, and VCR+ helps get the channels and times right.)
Why am I babbling like this? Because I'm a lousy trader, but I've been getting better. Every time I try to trade the old way, I lose. I've missed out on so many good stocks this year. YHOO, PHCM, BVSN, CMGI, QCOM - I try to trade them, but I fail to see the long term picture. Luckily, I have one big holding (the company I work for), and it's done really well this year.
But on the way up, it also went down a lot. Same with TIVO. I missed most of the Wireless and E-Commerce gains this year, but I'm concentrating on what I think will be the next big areas:
Personal Video (TIVO), Home Automation/Networking (ELON), and some of the foreign Internet providers that Jenna posted here recently.
Read the FAQ on TIVO's Web site, and see if you really want to short it. My plan is to drop a bunch of money in it now, check it once in a while, and let it become the next BVSN.
(I saw Susan G's and the other TIVO notes that were posted while I was writing this. The news article about TIVO was fantastic.)
