Children will do almost anything to please their parents, because the parent's attention seems to ensure the child's survival (on an instinctual basis). There have been cases of children who were beaten and tortured by their parents where the children begged to stay with them even after they had come to the attention of authorities, even if the only attention the child got from the parent was the infliction of pain and humiliation.

It must feel very good that your child believes you are his hero and have taught him things. However, his looking up to you like the alpha male of the den may even have something to do with the corporal way you established dominance over him. As far as everything he has learned from you, since children tend to parent like their own parents did if there is not some intervention, you have probably taught him to hit smaller beings to establish power over them. Way to go or something!
