Uncle Frank and NY Stew......I need help!

I have read and reread the Stephens report in an effort to understand all the licensing agreements Gemstar is involved in. The names are huge, Thompson, Microsoft, Sony, etc.

Now in the past few days we have had numerous announcements about efforts by these companies, and others, to take the next big steps in creating interactive television. Earlier today the article on Microsoft's plans in this area seemed confusing to me. It seems that numerous Gemstar licensees are battling over their respective roles. Does Gemstar win no matter which of these entities prevails in their planssince the IPG is such a critical component of the viewing experience, and GMST/TVGIA has that portal locked up with patent protections? It would seem this is highly possible, if I understand the licensing arrangements. Can anyone offer some analysis on this?

A confused Pomp.
