hey jw,

yes, i have the nics. i'm researching the heck out of things, though. for instance, the fact that i have a telco-return cable modem is looking like a prob for a lot of these networking programs like sygate. here is a quote from the sygate faq

"Most one-way cable modems will not work with SyGate"

also i read that having two identical nics in the gateway machine can be a prob when configuring things. i read that a good workaround is turning off plug-and-play prior to installing the second nic. this i'm getting from the tim higgins site

timhiggins.com

i'm in no hurry and i'm learning tons of good stuff as i research everything. so many digressions! <g3> plus i am in the middle of an exchange process with canon where they are replacing/upgrading two multi-function peripherals for me. i'm staying very busy with many aspects of working with computers. so the networking is not going quickly, which is totally okay with me. <g3>

sounds like you are progressing quite well? i hope so. glad to hear that you were able to use some info from the 'shield's up' site.

:)
