I actually totally agree with you Penni. Most children are very resilient, and can survive quite a bit. The survival instinct is very strong. Unfortunately, I was a very sensitive child. I'm sure that a less sensitive child would have done better with my childhood than I did. My daughter is even more sensitive than I was, and would have been damaged irreparably by being spanked.

I do think that it is important that parenting practices evolve so that fewer children are badly hurt in any way. The fact that most children survive does not mean that spanking is a positive; a debate about spanking is effective if only a couple of parents reevalute their positions. If you look at the fact that the percentage of American (and European) parents who approve of spanking is going down every year, and that the American Academy of Pediatrics disapproves of the practice, the trend is encouraging. I also think this is where smoking was a long time ago--a lot of people didn't think it was damaging, although sucking hot smoke into your throat and lungs is objectively not of positive benefit. I think that in 50 years spanking will be something from the Dark Ages.
